Victorian Watteau Back, Tweed Wrapper (Dressing Gown) in Red, Brown, Black and Green, Boned
1880s Watteau back wrapper in a small patterned tweed in red, green, brown and black. Round neckline yoke in black silk. Scalloped edge tweed ruffle set with a matching black silk ruffle. The inner structure is brown glazed cotton set with boning and center front hooks. The tweed front closes with hooks. the long narrow sleeves have a finished cuff edged in ruffle of matching black silk. The back of the garment has a Watteau back, named for the artist of the same name who used this style of back, box pleating in his paintings of women of his era, that was much earlier than this garment by better than a century. But still the term stuck. The whole garment is lined in glazed brown cotton that has darkened with age. There are a few small spots with the weave has loosened. See photos.
